Summer
Playscheme
In the summer of 2009, 131
children and young people aged 0-14yrs participated in the CARIS Summer
playscheme.
A number of parents who had
attended the playscheme in previous years with their children befriended and
supported new parents and children along with CARIS staff.
| The theme for
this year “If I ruled the world” engaged children in exploring a wide
range of activities and disciplines, Arts &
Crafts/Drama/Music-Drumming/Dance; making rod puppets, projections,
shadow theatre and original music and performing a magical environmental
story.
The workshops were delivered by
qualified paid session staff and professionals who volunteered. Senior
Lecturers from The University of the Arts, Brighton University,
Winchester University and Waltham Forest College ran workshops and
activities that allowed for children to be inventive, engage in group
work, challenge stereotypes, and have fun.
Trips were organised to Clacton on Sea
and Paradise Park. |
Although the weather
this year was not good; feedback was positive for both trips.
Evaluations from children, parents /carers and from staff clearly
indicate a great and enjoyable experience.
CARIS playscheme has
run for several years and we have seen many children through adolescence
and into adulthood. This year former playscheme users aged 16 and 17
years volunteered to mentor and support Art and Drama workers with
workshops.
The active
involvement of the parents and the willingness of students to mentor
other children add other elements to the playscheme, the impact of which
cannot be underestimated; but has positive outcomes for self esteem and
skills development for all.
