CARIS stands for Christian Action and Response In Society. A non-proselytising organisation, CARIS Haringey is committed to expressing God's love through social action. Our services are equally available to families of all faiths and none. Our most recent Annual Report is available on this site by going to the About Us page.

Who we are and what we do

We exist to help homeless families in Haringey, of which there are at least 6,000—that’s twice the number in most London boroughs, and proportionately many more than elsewhere in the UK.

  • These are among London’s poorest and most deprived families.

  • Families become homeless for many reasons. They may be asylum seekers or refugees, mentally or physically ill, fleeing domestic violence, etc.

  • Homelessness causes poor health and depression in parents and children and disrupts schooling.  The average homeless child loses 55 school days a year.

  • Homeless families live in temporary accommodation, which rarely “feels like home”.

They often need legal advice to secure basic rights, for example to receive benefits or force landlords to repair faulty heating or water supply.

CARIS is not celebrating the fact that its services are needed more now than ever. The number of families presenting as homeless in Haringey has not reduced and their needs are as complex as ever.

CARIS has Quality Mark through the Community Legal Service for general help and case work in welfare benefits, casework in Housing, and in immigration, a field in which we are also authorized by the Office of Immigration Services Commissioner to provide immigration advice at Level One. CARIS also has the Investors In People standard. You may be a prospective client, and putative volunteer, or a potential trustee! Whoever you are we hope you enjoy your visit to our website and find the information we have provided here useful.

Haringey has the third largest number of asylum seeking families in London, with high proportions supported by NASS. The national organisation Shelter - recent figures on homelessness shows that Haringey has a total of 8,700 children living in temporary accommodation. There are many reasons why people become homeless, e.g. mental ill-health; domestic violence; economic deprivation; cash flow crisis, caused by delayed benefits payments; redundancy; bankruptcy; worklessness, as well as a lack of affordable housing.
CARIS continues to invest in its staff and volunteers, by enabling them to access training opportunities to keep abreast of changing legislations, good practices and for collective and personal development. As a voluntary organisation, serving the community, we would like to acknowledge and thank each of our volunteers.
